Brake Pedal Position Sensor

The Brake Pedal Position Sensor (BPPS), mounted on the upper portion of the brake pedal assembly, provides critical pedal‑movement data to the ABS control module and other vehicle systems over the CAN bus. Unlike traditional brake switches—which are binary devices that simply open or close to activate the brake lights—the BPPS measures pedal travel and applied force. This allows control modules to distinguish between light, moderate, and panic braking. Because of this added resolution, the BPPS plays an essential role in modern braking, stability, and driver‑assistance systems.
Brake Lights

Vehicles equipped with ABS, traction control, stability control, and ADAS automatic‑braking systems require far more detailed brake‑pedal data than a simple on/off brake‑light switch can provide. While the brake switch remains essential for activating the brake lights, the Brake Pedal Position Sensor (BPPS) supplies the control modules with continuous information about pedal position and applied force. When the BPPS fails, the system may lose this critical input, causing the brake lights to either fail to illuminate or stay on even after the pedal is released.
No Start

Modern vehicles require the driver to depress the brake pedal before the engine can be started or the gear selector can be shifted out of Park. This safety interlock depends on accurate input from the Brake Pedal Position Sensor (BPPS). If the BPPS fails to send the correct pedal‑position signal to the control module, the system may not recognize that the brake pedal is being applied. As a result, the vehicle may refuse to start or prevent the shifter from moving out of Park.
BPPS on the CAN bus

Modern vehicles with advanced stability control, traction control, and ABS use this signal with information from steering angle, yaw rate, and lateral acceleration sensors. Many of these control modules receive this signal over the CAN bus. Failure to receive or a failed sensor can result in system codes, deactivation, and illumination of MIL ABS TCS ESC and brake system warning lights.
Scan Tool

Some sensors require scan tool calibration. Check with the vehicle manufacturer for any special installation instructions or TSB’s before proceeding.
